How close does the tank need to be to my roof?
You can position a water tank any distance from the roof, easily up to 10 metres or more as long as the top of the tank remains lower than the guttering and downpipes. Water tanks positioned away from the roof are usually connected to the downpipes with underground pipes and can be placed in a garden area or back corner of the yard away from entertainment or playing areas.

I have windows where I'd like to put a tank?
We have special low profile water tanks that will fit underneath the window level in a normal lowset brick veneer home. They are only 870cm wide so they will also fit in narrow side spaces. The holding capacity is 1900 litres and two or more can be connected together to provide more capacity.

Can I drink the water from my tank?
Yes, if your home is not connected to a reticulated (Town water) supply, the water is classed as drinking water. If your home is connected to town water, the law says your tank water is classed as non potable (non drinking) water.

Does it matter what sort of roof I collect my water from?
If the roof is painted, check the paint's suitability to collect water from. If you are unsure, consider repainting the roof. Do not collect water that has come into contact with lead, copper or copper treated timber. Avoid collecting rain water from any roof surface containing asbestos.

Can I use kerosene as an anti-mosquito layer in my tank?
No. There are health risks and it may cause damage to the internal surface of the tank. All rain water tanks should be fitted with fine mesh screens on the inlet and overflows to prevent mosquitos from breeding in the tank water. Check these screens and if missing or damaged have them repaired or replaced. Queenslander Tanks offers a maintenance and repair service for all rain water tanks and collection systems. My tank water smells a bit?
Bacteria can breed in tank water and in sufficient concentration, can give the water an unpleasant odour. Completely draining and flushing out the tank will normally solve the problem, but alternatively, the water can be treated in the tank and need not be wasted. Call Queenslander Tanks on (07) 3488 0115 for water treatment.

My tank water is cloudy?
Over a number of years, fine sediment will
build up in the bottom of most tanks and if the tank level is low, will be drawn out of the outlet making the water look cloudy. Queenslander Tanks offer a water tank cleaning service that removes the sediment from the bottom of the tank without draining the tank. Contact us on (07) 3488 0115
